Today’s Backpacking Tents are Smaller and Lighter Than Ever Before
Filed Under tents | Leave a Comment
Muna wa Wanjiru asked:
Backpacking tents, tents (usually nylon) designed specifically for hikers and backpackers in mind, can be a backpacker’s best friend. Sure, there alternative ways to spend a night in the woods. Many fast and light hikers are relying on bivy bags to keep themselves warm, nesting their sleeping bags inside waterproof bags and eschewing a tent all together. However, these weight watchers often wake up in sleeping bags soaked with condensation, even if the sky was clear all night. Other hikers spend the night under ultra light tarps or in hammocks, but when it starts to rain most of them find themselves flooded out, all too happy to share your dry, waterproof tent.
Backpacking tents aren’t the heavy, leaking, cumbersome shelters they once were either. Construction from nylon shells and fiberglass or carbon-fiber poles mean that today’s tents are smaller and lighter than ever before. No more hassling with mismatched tent poles in the middle of the night either; most manufactures now string their break-down poles with bungee cords which allow the pieces to snap together quickly. These poles, combined with color-coded snaps on the tent body, mean that most tents can be set up by one person in minutes, even if that one person is stumbling into camp in the dark as it’s starting to rain.
Once the tent is set up, you can be assured a dry night. The rain flies of modern backpacking tents are waterproofed and seam-sealed, so you won’t wake up at 3am to that tell-tale drip-drip-drip of a leaking seam. They’re ventilated too, allowing the moisture and condensation from your breath to carry outside and avoid wet tent walls in the morning. Another handy, common feature is a vestibule, allowing you to leave your muddy boots and pack outside your tent but still out of the rain.
Other small touches abound. Many backpacking tents are equipped with gear lofts, utilizing the extra space at the top of the tent’s dome for storage of small items and bags. Others have attachment points for flashlights or lanterns, though it’s important to keep sources of flame or heat away from the synthetic materials. Small pouches sewn into the inside of the tent serve as handy places for pocket change or eyeglasses.
When storm clouds roll in it’s good to know that you can easily carry a warm, dry shelter in your backpack, which can be ready to keep off the rain and snow for years to come.

Danielle asked:
My boyfriend and I are poor college students, so we’re trying to find a very cheap but relaxing activity for a short weekend summer getaway. We would love to pitch a tent on the beach of Lake Michigan (near the Grand Haven area) but we’re not sure if that’s legal or not. We’re not planning to start a bonfire or anything, we just want to hang out for a night on the beach. Will we risk getting arrested or anything?

Why I Do Not Use 4 Season Tents
Filed Under tents | Leave a Comment
Vita Vee asked:
There is no need to get 4 season tents for gentle summer camping. Even if there is a heavy downpour, the use of sleeping pads combined with adequate planning should keep everything fairly dry.
The important thing is to not camp at the bottom of a hill, to make sure the rain fly is secure, and to take advantage of natural cover. But, a four season tent can be a nice thing to have for extreme conditions, and if you have the money to spend on one, it is a luxury that can really improve your camping experience.
Basically, the difference between 4 season tents and regular tents is that a 4 season tent is tighter, with heavier outer walls. When it is all zipped up, there is no space anywhere for the elements to get in. In addition, 4 season tents are often stabler so that they can resist extremely heavy storms if need be. This does not mean, however, that you cannot use 4 season tents in nicer weather. Many styles of 4 season tents come with the ability to unzip the outer fly so that you can keep cool on summer days, while still braving near-arctic temperatures in the winter.
You will find, however, that the more extreme the conditions for which it was designed, the more specialized a 4 season tent will be. For example, some true mountaineering 4 season tents are not things that you would like to take camping on a warm summer night. The ventilation panels are small, with the result that it will be stuffy and hot at night if you are camping during the summer with them. Additionally, they are made of heavier, stronger material, and as a result are an added burden for your normal camping trip.
And of course, good 4 season tents can be prohibitively expensive, running upwards of $500 dollars sometimes. Compare this to a 1-2 person summer tent that you might buy at your camping store. I got mine for $30 dollars and, although it provides little warmth, it works alright during the summer when combined with a decent sleeping bag. The truth of the matter is, it is important to think about what you will be doing before you go out and buy expensive mountaineering equipment and 4 season tents that you will not need. You must make sure that your equipment fits its purpose.

Try Canopy Tents For Your Next Trade Show
Filed Under tents | Leave a Comment
Susan Slobac asked:
If you own a business, it makes sense to take that business out to various trade shows. This kind of direct marketing to either the public or members of the trade and press will have more of an impact if you focus on branding your company with several canopy tents that feature your company colors, logos and graphics emblazoned upon them. Not only is visual marketing very effective in a trade show setting, but portable outdoor canopies, which can be used indoors as well, offer a versatility that you will find useful.
Trade shows may be local affairs, or they can be held in major cities and attract businesses from around the world. Some trade shows are open to the public, while others are presented only for the press and members of the trade to attend. Doing a little research ahead of time will allow you to prepare well in advance for both kinds of audiences that you will deal with at these trade shows. Understanding what will work best at trade shows, what audience you are trying to reach, will also allow you to focus your marketing efforts, thus saving money on extemporaneous items that are less effective in this setting.
Part of preparing for a trade show means coming up with suitable trade show displays. Canopy tents work wonderfully in this regard. Your portable canopy tent provides a visible boundary from which you can conduct business, make presentations, offer promotional literature and other items, or offer services to visitors to your booth. Your canopy tent can be customized in terms of the fabric used. You can get a different look, and differing durability, when you select from popular canopy tent construction materials such as polyester silk, polyester poplin or polyester duck. Another aspect to keep in mind if you are planning to attend several trade shows is the ease of set up of your booth. portable outdoor canopys are sought out by experienced marketing people because of their speedy set up. Simply unfold the canopy tent, and it springs into shape. You will also want to consider traffic flow in and around your portable outdoor canopy. If the goal is to attract visitors to talk with you inside the portable outdoor canopy, then you will want canopy tents with several open walls. If you are selling products from the booth, you might prefer to keep visitors outside of the portable canopy tent area in order to have better control over supplies; half and full walls can be used in canopy tents’ design for this purpose. With so much versatility, you will find that canopy tents are a smart investment in building your business at trade shows.
