Moira Crooks asked:

My husband and I have been feeling the financial crunch of the recent economic woes our country is going through.  I imagine most of us in this country save for people like Warren Buffet or the latest PowerBall winner are feeling a pinch in our purse strings as of late.

We are blessed.  Right now my husband still is gainfully employed, I have had my book published, our children are healthy,  we have cars to drive, and a roof over our heads.   However, things can change in the blink of an eye.  Foreclosure and repossession of vehicles is always a possibilty when money is tight.

I will admit that our financial concerns have been pressing on my mind, so much so that yesterday when I heard Hank Williams Jr’s song Red, White, and Pink Slip Blues I was on the verge of tears.  In the song, he sings of hiding his truck at a friend’s  because they are going to need it when they come to take the house away.

As I thought about that song, I thought too that getting upset over losing material possesions like a home or a vehicle is not really the right thing to do.   Obviously we have worked hard to provide a home and keep a van so we can travel where we need to go, but it is really the most  important thing in our lives?

If you look to God’s Word you soon discover the answer to that question.  When we read about Abraham’s story in Genesis we soon discover that he always did 2 things when he moved anywhere.  Firstly, he always built an altar.  Secondly, he pitched a tent.  In Genesis 12:8 we see an example of this, “And he moved from there to the mountain east of Bethel, and he pitched his tent with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east; there he built an altar to the LORD and called on the name of the LORD.” Abraham built an altar and pitched a tent.

Abraham always built something permanant, an altar to God as a response to God’s promise to him.  The altar symbolizes our consecration and worship to God; our spiritual life.   The tent symbolizes all of our earthly possessions and achievements; our physical and material life.  Abraham always put the altar before the tent because worship must come before blessings can be received.

Think about a tent.  A tent has no foundation.  No permanency.  It is transitory by nature.  When you pitch a tent, you aren’t intending to stay there forever.  This should be the nature of our physical lives.  Yet so many of us try to make material things into permanent foundations of our lives.  Focusing and stressing out on mortgage payments, car payments instead of focusing on God puts our lives out of order.  We are building our tents and pitching our altars.  I am not saying we shouldn’t pay our bills, but we need to focus on worshipping and returning to God first before anything else.   Our souls get along well when God has His proper place in our lives.  When things get out of place in our lives and they seem a mess, its because God is not in His place in our lives.

So how do we build an altar first and pitch our tents second?  If we look to Genesis 35:1-5 we can find the formula for this. First we need to return our lives to God.  We need to rededicate our lives to Him.  We need to make God first priorty in our lives and not the house, the car, the boat, etc.  We need to rekindle that flame of first love of God in our hearts.   Next, we need to reject idols in our lives.  I am not talking about American Idol here.  I am speaking about anything in our lives that has taken God’s place.  Anything that has become our priorty above God.  Anything that has robbed us of our devotion to God.  It could in fact, be entertainment like American Idol  or it could be money, people, or even ministry.  We also need to purify ourselves.  We need to rid our lives of any of bad habits and sins that keep us from building our altars to God.  Finally, we need to remember our vows to God.  We must honor God with our vows and tithes.

Its not an easy path to take, but we must get our priorties in order.  We need to not worry about what tent we are living in.  We need to concern ourselves with building that altar to our God.  If we do so, we will find that He will indeed provide.  We need to strive to build an altar and pitch our tent.

Peter Geisheker asked:

Truck tents are a wonderful way to get a good night sleep while you are traveling on the road. If you plan to be on a road trip with your family, the use of a truck tent can help you to give everyone a good night sleep when you are finished driving for the day.

The use of these truck tents can help you keep your sleeping quarters off the ground and out of the elements. They can be fitted to go with your pickup truck, SUV, or even mini van. The tent will fit over the back of your vehicle and provide you with a save and comfortable place to get some rest for the night. Add an air mattress and you will have a nice cozy place to turn in that will keep you out of the elements. This is a much more appealing way to get a good nights sleep than the hard ground that you could be sleeping on with a traditional tent.

Camping is one of the most cost effective ways that a family can travel and enjoy a vacation. Getting out in the great outdoors is something that many people enjoy. Using your vehicle in your camping experience is a great way to get you up off of the ground and in a safe place while you are sleeping. Some of the truck tents that you will see offered will have the ability to cover the back of the vehicle as well as attach to the ground in the same way that a traditional tent will. This gives you a great deal more space and allows the whole family to sleep comfortably in the same location without the use of extra tents and space. When you are on the road, it is very important that you get the rest that you need to avoid accidents and falling asleep at the wheel.

Make sure that you check the quality of the truck tent that you use for your family vacation on the road. You want to be sure that the tent is well made and will keep out rain and cold while you are sleeping. Lower quality truck tents could be made of materials that will leak or not hold up well over time. When you purchase your truck tent, you should look for one that will take your family through a number of vacations and trips. There are a number of resources for these handy travel companions. Truck tents can be found online or in sporting goods stores in the camping supply department. Make sure that you look for a high quality tent that will last you for a number of years.

They are a wonderful way to get a good night sleep when you are traveling with just one or two people. You should make sure that you rest while you are traveling long distances to keep yourself safe. Using a truck tent is a way that many people have utilized the room in their trucks and SUV’s to get a good night sleep for everyone on the trip.

Going camping in the desert. Day temperatures are in the 90’s and night temperatures are in the 50’s. My idea is to put a tarp over the tent when the sun sets to keep the heat in. Not using sleeping bags either, using Thermarest and blankets. Please do not respond with “use a sleeping bag” b/c this is not an option. We are flying to camp and will be renting a car, will not be taking sleeping bags as they take up too much room.

Abhishek Agarwal asked:

Buying a family tent with care will make you comfortable and keep you safe and happy if it is what makes

everyone feel good. Family tents start at small sizes where you could accommodate only 2 or 3 people and you

could get even much larger ones where a family of ten could live comfortably. The space for ten people to sleep in a tent is not what you think like a spacious room, but in a snug way lying close to each other. This means

that people would have to sleep in the opposite direction with the head of one facing the feet of the other to make sure that all fit into the tent. So it is always better to buy a tent with a higher capacity - like if

there are 6 people buy one for 8, this way there will be more space available for all to sleep comfortably. A

family tent will also need room for keeping everyone’s belongings inside and also a place to put away gear and

food stuff and muddy shoes which could make a mess in the living areas.

Camping tents for families

In camping tents for families the flaps could be let down and create another room inside the tent itself.

During the day when the flaps are rolled up there is a big room instead of several smaller ones. This way there

is some privacy too. Some tents also have additional rooms that could be zipped on. Sometimes if there are too

many insects and you are unable eat out doors, you could zip on a porch and eat there to avoid the insects.

During the day time this could give some shade when you want to be outside the main tent. There are zip down

flaps like windows in some tents to give more ventilation to those who are indoors without keeping the main

flaps open.

However, bear in mind that the larger the tent you plan to buy the more weight will you be carrying around

while camping. So if you do absolutely need a large tent then make sure that you are traveling by car and not

hiking. For hiking you will need something lightweight and cannot afford to have such a heavy burden on your

hands.

Melissa Thornton asked:

Like everything else in camping, it all comes down to a good preparation. If you go camping you need to know how to set up your camping tents, you need to be absolutely sure that you have every little item that belongs to the tent (sticks, stacks, rope) and that you know exactly all the techniques on how to build your camping tents. If you do not prepare, building camping tents will be a time consuming catastrophe and it can end up with you all having a horrible experience and going home before the camping trip actually starts. So, make sure you are equipped with the right stuff and knowledge in how to use it.

Practice and preparation

Before you go anywhere you need to put your tent up at least one time, if you have a yard that would be perfect if you don’t go to a park and build it there. This way you know if the tent is complete, if you have everything and it saves you an enormous amount of stress later on if you know how to build your tent. Making mistakes is not so bad if it is in your own yard and you do not have to sleep in the tent that night.

Because you leave the luxury of home behind when you go on a camping trip you need to be sure your stay will be as safe and as comfortable as possible. Especially safety is essential on a camping trip. When this is your first camping trip we advise you to choose a location not to far from your home place, this way you can return home when you stumble upon some problems.

Find the right spot

It is best when you find some plain and even land to start building your camping tents, high land especially when rain is predicted is an absolute pre, this will help you to keep your tent as well as your sleeping bags dry. So look for even, plain and high land.

A Ground Cloth is No Luxury

This is an essential piece of camping gear, it keeps the floor of the actual tent clean and dry and it protects it against rocks and pointy objects. It protects the tents from all kinds of damage. It is a cheap piece of camping gear and you can buy it at every local camping store and even most hardware stores will have it for sale.

Hammer Stacks in the Ground

Almost all of the camping tents come with stacks and you need to hammer those stacks in to the ground. But the most cheap tents also have cheap stacks and they bent and rust and eventually break. So do your self a favor and buy some extra good aluminum or steel stacks. They need to be firm because you need to hammer the stacks to the ground and fix the tent rope tightly so the tents will not blow out even in heavy windy conditions.

Do you still want to go?

All the above sounds like camping is horrible and dangerous and it really isn’t you just need to be prepared. Camping is a real fun and wonderful way to spend time with your family and friends, you are in the outdoors, doing stuff together and experience all kinds of things that only camping can give you. So prepare and enjoy…

Abhishek Agarwal asked:

If your children often complain of boredom, the thought of going on camping can almost make them jump with joy. Camping brings to mind the pictures of campfire hot dogs, s’mores and sleeping under open star-lit night sky. All these can pump even an exhausted teenager with tremendous excitement. Normally, the idea of camping is associated with vacations that may not be possible frequently, considering everyone’s busy schedules. However, getting innovative with your camping gear can enable you to enjoy a fun excursion without even leaving the boundaries of your backyard.

Which student in this world would not want to celebrate his/her completion of school education. If weather allows, it may be a great idea to celebrate under star lit night sky by putting up your camping tent in the garden outdoors. It can turn out to be a fun experience and a much needed break for all the members of the family. You can light the campfire with the kids no longer needed school papers to symbolize the conclusion of school education. Throw in the common camping food like hot dogs, marshmallows, hamburgers etc. and it will become an experience to remember and repeat.

If you have a single child who gets charged up with the idea of camping, you can make his/her birthday an everlasting memory by setting up the camping tent to sleep over after party. In case the safety concerns regarding campfire bother you too much, you can always refrain from it and set up all the food in the kitchen or an outdoor grill. Your little one as well as his/her friends will have a memorable time together.

Another special occasion to pull out your camping tent is fourth of July. It is normally mid summer at that time of the year and a camping tent can be a great place for kids to unwind. Even while everyone gets busy with fireworks in the evening, kids can enjoy themselves watching all the display from the comfort of their camping tent. You will no longer need to worry about them wandering all over the house.

In summers, an impromptu sleep party arranged outdoors with the help of your camping gear can also be a great way to break away from normal routines and have a fun weekend. Thus, your camping tent can provide you with much more value than you bargained for when you bought it just for occasional trips.

I’m planning on tent camping at this weekends race. The website doesn’t answer the question, nor their phone tree. I’ve contacted them via e-mail, and no response. I’m meeting my brother there, and I need to know if the track has a lot they allow the additional vehicle to park in, and if there is a charge. Thei “fan guide” leaves a rather large grey area here.
